Visual impairment

In visual impairment or amblyopia, the eye is typically entirely healthy but visual acuity is poor even after refractive vision correction using eyeglasses.

Formation in childhood

The development of visual impairment or amblyopia usually appears in childhood, when the brain adapts to the supremacy of an opaque or double image, which is a consequence of squinting or anisometropia - unequal refractive power of the two eyes. If the cause for visual impairment is squinting, the eye becomes visually impaired with a higher dioptric value.

Early treatment is important

Amblyopia develops in the period from birth to the age of eight or nine years of age, when a child's visual system is still developing. A problem that could lead to visual impairment must be found and treated as soon as possible, since changes are irreparable after the ninth year of age and visual impairment is permanent. The degree of vision loss due to amblyopia can range from very mild to very severe.
