Age-related refractive error correction surgery with multifocal lens implantation

If you've entered your fifth decade and notice you're holding the newspaper further and further away, you're probably suffering from farsightedness that sooner or later affects us all. But if you can't bet used to your reading glasses, we're happy to cheer you up: age-related refractive error can also be corrected.

The most suitable candidates are those with a prior refractive error

Age-related farsightedness can be corrected with the insertion of a special, multifocal lens that enables the wearer to see near and distant objects clearly. The most appropriate candidates for this procedure are those whose age-related farsightedness develops with a prior refractive error – whether this be nearsightedness or farsightedness. The best surgical results are achieved with this condition.

I am very happy that I decided to get cataract surgery with Morela Ophthalmologists. My surgery was performed by Dr. Kristina Mikek. The procedure was short, completely painless, not to speak of the kindness and commitment shown by Dr. Mikek, who was constantly encouraging me and thanking me for my cooperation. I would happily decide to do this procedure again. At the control examination the day after my surgery, I could see like a hawk and could read the smallest text from the chart given to me by Dr. Mikek. I really had no problems after the surgery and was really satisfied and elated that I decided to take this treatment. Goodbye reading and distance glasses! I warmly recommend Morela Ophthalmologists to everyone. They really are the best with Dr. Kristina Mikek at the head.

What can I say, it’s a great feeling to wake up in the morning and not have to fumble around the night table for my glasses. I wore glasses since I was two years old, so this is quite a significant change for me. Actually, Morela Ophthalmologists made my big wish come true! The surgery was completely painless, as was the recovery, so I would like to compliment the entire team. Each and every one of them were very professional. So, if you want to correct your vision, I warmly recommend them, they are worthy of your trust!

Average visual acuity without eyeglasses before and after surgery

Most patients become completely independent from glasses

Over 85 percent of patients are completely independent from glasses after multifocal lens insertion in both eyes. This means they can read, use the computer, drive and practice sports activities without wearing glasses. This procedure does completely transform your lifestyle and makes you feel younger because you don't even need to search for your glasses anymore. If you are among those who suffer from cataracts, it is especially important that you consider the decision to insert a multifocal lens, because in this case, the surgery not only restores your eyesight but also provides perfect visual acuity when looking from up close or at a distance – entirely without glasses.

More about surgery success

  • Assessing suitability for surgery
    Duration: 15 minutes

An informative consultation is a short free of charge examination that allows us to determine whether you are a good candidate for age-related refractive vision correction surgery with multifocal lens implantation.
If it turns out that this surgery would be suitable for you, we will explain the course of surgery, its benefits and limitations. We will do our best to answer all of your questions. The guarantee for the highest degree of safety and quality of our procedures is our wealth of experience, professional qualifications and cutting edge technological equipment. Our expertise is also confirmed by the international accreditation granted by the American Joint Commission International organization.

Take this short test to verify whether you are likely a good candidate for age-related refractive vision correction surgery with multifocal lens implantation.

  • Detailed examination prior to surgery
    Duration: 1 hour

If you are a good candidate for surgery and decide in favour of it, we will perform another detailed examination of your eyes and eye fundus prior to the operation. This allows us to exclude the presence of diseases or alterations of the eye where multifocal lens insertion is not possible. During this examination, we will perform all the biometrical eye measurements that are necessary for the calculation of the lens dioptre value and will advise you on the selection of the most suitable lenses. There are many different types of multifocal lenses which differ in their optical characteristics. All lenses are ordered and manufactured individually so that they are precisely adapted to your eyes and dioptre. We use only the highest quality lenses that are reliably tested and produced by leading lens manufacturers.

  • Surgical procedure
    Duration: 15 minutes

The procedure for this surgery is the same as for cataract surgery. Surgery is performed at the clinic under drop anaesthesia and lasts between 10 and 15 minutes. The surgery is completely painless and can be performed on both eyes simultaneously. Age-related farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism are corrected by first removing the eye's natural lens through a small, three millimetre long incision and then replacing it with an artificial multifocal lens. After surgery, you will receive all necessary medications and instructions on how to take them. In the first several days after surgery, our doctors are available to you over the telephone 24 hours a day. We believe that quick and easy access to a doctor is very important because it provides our patients with a feeling of safety and peace of mind.

  • Post - surgery examination
    Duration: 15 minutes

Recovery from this type of procedure is rapid. Eyesight is usually already entirely normal on the day after surgery. You will nevertheless have to get used to looking at objects from up close with the inserted multifocal lens, which can take several weeks. The first post-surgery examination is usually performed the day after the surgery and an additional check-up is performed three to four weeks later. We always schedule the post-surgery examination so that it allows us to carefully monitor your recovery, which ensures safety and the optimal result of the refractive error correction.

Is it possible that I end up seeing worse than I did before having the surgery?

This can happen if complications arise during surgery, such as bleeding in the eye, retina detachment or posterior capsular rupture. But the chance of serious complication is minimal, less than 0.1‰. We have never had such complications at our clinic.

What is the main difference between a multifocal and an ordinary lens?

The optics of a multifocal lens is very complex and is designed so that it bends light under different angles. This allows a multifocal lens to restore visual acuity when looking at near and far objects despite the onset of age-related farsightedness. After multifocal lens insertion, the patient no longer needs glasses for reading or for seeing at a distance. This also applies to patients who need cataract surgery and decide in favour of multifocal lens insertion.

Is it possible for the multifocal lens to blur over time?

We use only the highest quality multifocal lenses manufactured by renowned specialists that are proven to be safe and that do not change over time, which means that the lens practically cannot get blurred. A complication that can occur but which can also successfully be repaired is the later development of posterior capsule opacification – the blurring of the capsule in which the artificial lens is placed. If this occurs, the opacification is corrected in a relatively simple manner with a completely painless laser procedure that takes just a few minutes and is performed at the clinic as an outpatient procedure.

Is eye lens insertion a painful procedure?

No. The surgical procedure of multifocal lens insertion is the same as in cataract surgery. We perform this procedure at the clinic under eye-drop anesthesia. With this procedure, eye-drop local anesthesia is used very simply to numb the eye and to make the surgery completely painless.
