Cataract surgery

If you notice that you see worse in low light conditions, have more difficulty recognizing colours and experience glare in natural sunlight or even see double, it's a good idea to make an appointment for a check-up in order to determine whether you are suffering from cataracts. At our centre, we perform over one thousand cataract surgeries per year. Also on concession.

Cataracts development factors

Many factors influence on the development of this disease, the most common being genetic predisposition. If both your parents suffered from cataracts, there is a good chance that you will also develop it as you age. Individuals who are more predisposed to suffer from cataracts include women (due to hormonal changes during menopause), smokers and those who excessively expose their eyes to UV-rays. The only effective way to treat cataracts is by surgery, which most people decide to take when poor vision obstructs their everyday activities. At the same time, this surgery is also an opportunity to get rid of your reading glasses. Ask the doctor about the possibility of multifocal lens insertion during your examination.

    Tomaz, 66 years,  20. September 2013

Thank you very much for the successful refractive surgery! I feel great, space orientation indoors and outdoors, on the street, is much safer. Dr. Kristina, many thanks!

Only a year ago, I could barely cross the street while wearing my glasses. After Dr. Kristina performed the surgery, I can walk down the street without my glasses. Thank you from the heart to everyone, I feel reborn!

The only solution is surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most common eye surgeries that restore 100 percent visual acuity to those who have a healthy eye fundus. Worsening vision despite surgery can occur in patients who have some accompanying eye disease. At our centre, we also perform cataract surgery on concession, which requires you to have a referral from your personal doctor. We perform surgeries in a modern operating room equipped with the latest technology. Along with the wealth of experience of our doctors, this reduces the risk of potential complications to the lowest possible level. Our expertise is also proven by our statistics – in the past ten years, we have had less than 1‰ complications in cataract surgery.

More about surgery success

  • Detailed examination prior to surgery
    Duration: 15 minutes

If it turns out that you suffer from cataracts, we will perform a detailed examination of your eyes and eye fundus prior to the surgery. This allows us to exclude the presence of diseases or alterations of the eye that would not make the surgery possible. During the examination, we will also explain the course of the procedure, which is the same as in age-related refractive vision correction and will advise you on selecting a suitable lens. There are two types of lenses. With a monofocal lens, you will still need reading glasses after surgery, while a multifocal lens enables both near and far visual acuity. Cataract surgery can therefore also be an opportunity to get rid of your reading glasses!

  • Outpatient surgery
    Duration: 30 minutes

This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under eye-drop anaesthesia and takes from 10 to 15 minutes. It is entirely painless and can be performed on both eyes simultaneously. The procedure is carried out by first using an ultrasound device to shatter and remove the cloudy eye lens through a thin, three millimetre wide incision in the cornea and then replacing it with an appropriate artificial lens. After surgery, you will receive all necessary medications and instructions on how to take them. In case of emergency, our doctors are available to you 24 hours a day for several days after the surgery.

  • Post-surgery examination
    Duration: 15 minutes

A post-operative examination is already performed on the first day after surgery since visual acuity is normally restored very quickly. If everything is all right, an appointment for another check-up is set for a month after surgery. At this second examination, those with a monofocal lens are prescribed reading glasses. If you prefer, you can schedule the second check-up with your own optometrist.

Will I be able to see immediately after surgery?

Due to dilating the pupils and the strong microscopic light that shines on the eye during surgery, vision is somewhat blurred immediately afterwards. Patients who do not suffer from degenerative alterations on the eye fundus and who have no complications during surgery can already see clearly on the day after surgery.

How long is the intraocular lens life?

Lenses that are implanted into the eye during cataract surgery are designed to remain unaltered for your entire life.

What do I gain if I decide in favour of surgery with multifocal lens insertion?

If you opt for monofocal lenses, you will still need reading glasses after surgery. If you choose multifocal lenses, your near and far visual acuity will be perfect, so that you will no longer require an extra pair of glasses. This will also save you money from not having to purchase corrective glasses.

Is a laser also used during cataract surgery?

A laser is used if the posterior capsule membrane becomes opaque several months after the insertion of the artificial intraocular lens, a condition that causes visual acuity to worsen again. In these patients, the opaque membrane is corrected using a laser to improve visual acuity again.
