Refractive vision correction with intraocular lens implantation

If your dioptre is very high, the first thing you probably do in the morning is look for your glasses. And because you can barely see without them, you probably know the feeling of powerlessness if your glasses unexpectedly break, smash or get lost. But there is also a solution for you - one that allows us to provide you with perfect eyesight and ensure that you say goodbye to your glasses forever.

Say goodbye to a high dioptre

If your nearsightedness or farsightedness is very high you are probably not a candidate for refractive laser surgery but we can correct your visual acuity using surgery with intraocular lens implantation. This type of surgery is similarly as successful and safe as laser refractive vision correction but is not yet as well known. Due to there being a major difference between visual acuity before and after this surgery, the improvement of the quality of life is much more dramatic and normally exceeds the patient's expectations.

Eye surgery changed my life. Before the surgery, my dioptre was -9.00 on both eyes. After the surgery, my dioptre reduced to 100% vision, which made me really happy and despite my initial fear of the procedure, I recommend it to anyone. It’s not just that I can see great again – the fact that I don’t have to insert lenses every day also means a lot to me. I no longer have to worry about my lens supply, my daily eye hygiene or whether all I have all my accessories with me - since I couldn’t function anywhere with this dioptre if I’d lost my lenses!
In addition to the painless surgery, I have to commend the caring and professional staff that offers all the help and information you need and leaves you with a feeling of trust in their work before, during and after surgery. Congratulations and all the best compliments!

Unobtrusive intraocular lenses

In the last decade, remarkable progress has been made in the development of new lens shapes that are implanted into the eye to correct refractive error. Because they are so small, these lenses are completely imperceptible and do not change the eye's appearance in any way. The lenses are made of a biologically compatible material that has been used in cataract surgery for over 50 years and that is well tolerated by the eye. At our centre, we use only the highest quality Visian ICL.

More about surgery success

  • Assessing suitability for surgery
    Duration: 15 minutes

An informative consultation is a short, free of charge examination that we use to find out whether you are a good candidate for refractive vision correction surgery. If it turns out that intraocular lens implantation would be a good choice for your dioptre, we will explain the course of the surgery, its benefits and limitations. We will do our best to answer all of your questions. The guarantee for the highest degree of safety and quality of our procedures is provided by our wealth of experience, our professional qualifications and the most modern technological equipment. Our expertise is also confirmed by the international accreditation of the American Joint Commission International organization.
Take this short test to verify whether you are probably a good candidate for laser refractive vision correction.

  • Detailed examination before surgery
    Duration: 1 hour

Before surgery, a more detailed examination of the eyes that includes an examination of the eye fundus and measurements required for the selection and insertion of the intraocular lens is necessary. This examination allows us to exclude the possibility of disease or eye alterations that would not make intraocular lens insertion recommendable. Factors that can limit the possibility of intraocular lens insertion are the width of the pupil and the depth of the eye's anterior chamber. On the basis of the examination results and discussion on your expectations for improved vision, we will be able to recommend the lens that is most suitable for you. You can be reassured by the fact that we use only the highest quality lenses of renowned manufacturers that are proven safe and that assure lifelong quality vision. Remember: We use only the best for your eyes!

  • Surgical treatment
    Duration: 30 minutes

The procedure for inserting the intraocular lens is carried out at the clinic and performed under local anaesthesia. The entire procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is completely painless. The procedure is normally first performed on one eye. Two to three weeks later, it is also performed on the other eye. We correct refractive error by inserting an artificial lens through an incision in the anterior part of the eye that is only a few millimetres wide. In contrast to laser surgery, the cornea is not altered during intraocular lens insertion nor is the natural eye lens removed. After surgery, you will obtain all necessary medications and instructions on how to take them. In the first several days after surgery, our doctors will be available to you over the phone 24 hours a day. We believe that quick and easy access to a doctor is very important, as it provides our patients with a feeling of safety and peace of mind.

  • Post-surgery examination
    Duration: 15 minutes

Recovery from this procedure is rapid. Typically, eyesight is already completely normal on the day after surgery. Nevertheless, reading for longer periods of time, working on the computer and watching television must be avoided in the first days after surgery. It is possible that you will temporarily be a little more sensitive to strong light, experience glare and that the operated eye could be a little more teary than normal. The first post-surgery examination is usually performed on the day after surgery and two additional check-ups follow at intervals of two to three weeks. Post-surgery check-ups are always scheduled so that we can carefully monitor your recovery, which ensures safety and an optimal result in the correction of refractive error.

What if my eye will not tolerate the intraocular lens?

Lenses are made of the same material as those that are inserted into the eye during cataract surgery and these lenses have been used for over 50 years. It has been proven that this material is not rejected by the eye and that this type of lens ensures lifelong quality vision. It is possible that ageing results in the blurring of your natural eye lens as a result of cataract development. If this occurs, the intraocular contact lens is removed together with the natural lens during cataract surgery.

What if something goes wrong?

It is very common and normal to feel afraid before any type of surgery. The easiest way to eliminate this fear is by getting as much information as possible about the recommended procedure and to familiarize yourself with the experiences of other patients who have already undergone the surgery. It is also very important to have a personal connection and to feel trust in the surgeon who will perform your surgery as well as in the technology that will be used. Long years of experience, the expertise of our doctors, cutting edge equipment and the international accreditation of our centre assures the highest degree of safety in every procedure we perform.

Is intraocular lens insertion surgery painful?

No. This surgery is completely painless and is performed under local anesthesia. After surgery, it is possible that you will temporarily be a little more sensitive to strong light, experience glare and more tearing than usual in the operated eye.

Does the inserted eye lens change the appearance of the eye?

No. After insertion of the intraocular lens, the eye looks completely natural. The intraocular lens lies in the eye’s anterior chamber, directly behind the iris and is placed on the natural lens. It is very difficult to see it with the naked eye, even if look into the eye from up close.
